Job Title

  • Hourly/Non-Exempt Employee:
  • Paid by the hour
  • Is required to use time tracking software
  • Receives 1 hour of PTO per 30 hours worked
  • Paid overtime
  • Must have an approved time off request before taking leave

Job Summary

  • The Dental Hygienist is to assist the dentist. Perform cleanings, expose and process x-rays, sealants, manage the dental operatories, perform patient intake, travel and fill in for other dental assistants, as needed.

Qualification Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience within a medical/dental clinic valuable, but not required
  • State dental hygiene licensure
  • Local anesthesia/laser/nitrous oxide- if applicable based on the state requirements
  • Active CPR certification
  • Ability to work hours of the shifts
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to use computer software
  • Good time management skills
  • Must be able to concentrate and maintain a close attention to detail using visual and tactile senses
  • Ability to multitask is required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

Performance Standards

  • 30-40+ hours per week, typically Monday – Friday (8 AM – 12 PM & 1 PM – 5 PM)
  • Attend training events and after hours work for special assignments (and travel time)

Direct Supervisor

  • Doctor / Office Manager

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Set up and prepare room according to OSHA standards; clean up and sterilize after patient procedures are completed.
  • Perform prophylaxis on adult and child patients with dentist checking work, removing plaque and calculus, deep scaling when needed.
  • Provide fluoride treatment under supervision of dentist.
  • Perform radiographs as a diagnostic tool, at a high level of consistent diagnostic quality.
  • Perform intra oral and extra oral exams and report findings to dentist; perform initial medical history review. Interview patients and update health histories prior to treatment.
  • Provide patient dental care education. Demonstrate oral hygiene including all brushing, flossing, and irrigation.
  • Review charts a day in advance for updates and work needed, mark charts and communicate with the front desk. Perform charting as needed.
  • Make accurate computer entries for charges, scheduling, treatment, patient information changes and verification of information between chart and computer record.
  • Practice recommended safeguards for personal and patient safety. Provide supportive care for patients at all times.
  • Equipment used: Hand pieces, surgical instruments, intra oral camera and internet based dental software.
  • Maintain infection control and OSHA guidelines.
  • Keep the operatory neat and clean during procedures. Keep hand pieces properly maintained. Ensure that vacuum lines, unit, chair, light, instruments, and tray setups are thoroughly disinfected and properly sterilized at all times in accordance with OSHA standards. Restock rooms as necessary.
  • Order and maintain inventory of dental supplies. Provide administration with appropriate purchase data.
  • Ability to travel as necessary. Must have reliable vehicle and valid automobile liability insurance if traveling.
  • Being present and participating in morning huddle and staff meetings.
  • Staying on time with scheduled appointments.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a professional team.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
  • Handle Protected Health Information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

HIPAA Requirements

  • The expanded function dental hygienist will have access to PHI in the course of carrying out his/her duties. Applying the minimum necessary standard of HIPAA, the designated records sets to which this employee will have access include: the full dental chart, the full medical chart; all information in the practice management system, all other billing and account information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to speak English.
  • Ability to speak Spanish or willingness to learn Spanish is helpful, but not required.
